CHAPTER 19

ANTON

She yanked on her arm, but I only tightened my grasp.

“It’s none of your business.”

“Wrong, babygirl. Now tell me.”

She turned her head. “It was years ago. Just a stupid teenage prank for attention.”

I ran the pad of my thumb over the delicate line. “No.”

“No?”

“No, that is not the truth.”

She turned to look back at me.

Her cute stubborn chin rose. “Really? Because I don’t recall you being there.”

I pressed my lips to her inner wrist. Speaking against her warm skin, I said, “This was pain, not a prank.”

I pulled my shirt out of my waistband and placed her hand against my side over my own scar. “Do you feel that? Knife wound. My first stint in a Russian prison when I was sixteen.”

I then unbuttoned the first two buttons of my shirt and slipped her hand inside, sliding her fingers just under my collarbone by my right shoulder. “That is a bullet wound. It was when I decided to get out of arms dealings and turn to other pursuits.”

She pulled her hand free and locked her fingers together. “Your scars are different.”

I shrugged. “Scars are scars. They are proof you survived a painful experience. Nothing more. Nothing less.”

She swiped at a tear on her cheek as she kept her gaze averted. “So is this the real reason why you’ve been chasing after me? Why, you think I need you? Because you saw my scar and took pity on me?”

“I don’t think you need me. I know it. And no.”

She shook her head. “You Russians sure don’t waste a lot of time with elaborate explanations or long sentences, do you.”

I picked up a lock of her hair and ran the silky length between my fingers. “We prefer action to words.”

She pulled her hair from my grasp. “It doesn’t really matter. Now that you’ve seen it, whatever this was between us is definitely over.”

She slipped between my body and the wall and ducked into the nearest doorway.

Before she had a chance to close the door, I followed.

The bedroom was small and neat.

A double bed dominated the space, its wooden frame mismatched with the bureau that was jammed at an awkward angle into a corner between a window and panel door closet. Its surface was bare except for a pink hairbrush. The walls were adorned with art posters and one of the Chicago skyline over the bed. Like the rest of the apartment, there were no family photos and few personal items.

She whipped off my hoodie and tossed it to me.

Although I appreciated the view of her cute sleeping shorts and tank top, I preferred the idea of her cute body being kept warm by something I owned.

She crossed her arms defensively over her middle. “You wanted to know how I could still be a virgin at my age? Easy. There are only three types of boys.”

She counted off on her fingers. “Those who are freaked out by the idea that I might be”—she then raised her arms to do air quotes—“damaged when they find out I didn’t have the perfect little cookie-cutter suburban childhood.
